The Rev. Clarence Hoven, 91, of Albia and formerly of Oskaloosa died late Friday evening, Aug. 10, 2012, at the Monroe County Hospital. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Aug. 17, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Oskaloosa with Reverend Dale Visser and Reverend Gary Davis officiating. A family prayer service will be held in the fellowship hall at 10:15 preceding the service. Burial will be in Liberty Cemetery near Bussey, IA with Military Honors by the Ottumwa Honor Guard. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m., Thursday, August 16 at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel; the family will be at the funeral chapel from 5-7 to greet visitors. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Monroe County or the First Christian Reformed Church.
Clarence Hoven, son of Otto and Grace Douwsma Hoven, was born Sept. 2, 1920 in Chicago, IL. He began his education in Chicago and continued it in Monticello, IN. He completed his ministerial education at Kuyper Bible College (formerly Reformed Bible Institute). He served with the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1946 as a Military Policeman. Clarence worked as a farmer and did plaster work before beginning his ministry work in Oskaloosa, IA in 1956. He served God in ministries in Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Arizona and Canada. Clarence is a member of the First Christian Reformed Church. His hobbies included gardening and fishing.
Clarence was united in marriage with Agnes Spoolstra, Aug. 20, 1941. They were married 69 years. To this union seven children were born, four daughters: Darlene and Terry Miller of Bussey, IA; Clara and Ralph Klein of Pella, IA; Angie and Steven Rheuport of Mitchellville, IA and Joy Block of Ankeny, IA; three sons: George, deceased; Jim and Lora Hoven of Albia, IA; and Clare and Marla Hoven of Albia, IA. The family grew to include 25 grandchildren, 65 great-grandchildren and eight great-great- grandchildren.
Surviving Clarence are three sisters: Bernice Visser, Jean and Bernard Vander Veen and Henrietta DeGroot; three brothers: Bill and Donna Hoven, Bob Hoven and Ray and Ann Hoven; a sister-in-law, Marge Gras; many nieces and nephews; and many cousins.
Clarence was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Agnes; a son, George; four brothers, and two sisters.
