James Richard Welsh, the son of Eugene and Mae DeWit Welch, was born March 27, 1939, in Oskaloosa. He was raised in Oskaloosa and attended Oskaloosa Schools. Jim enlisted in the U.S. Navy Sept. 13, 1956; he served as a baker in Spain and on the USS Neptune ARC2. He was discharged Nov. 9, 1962. Jim married Jean Culumber Nov. 22, 1967, in Wheaton, Ill. They made their home and raised their family in Oskaloosa. Jim held various jobs early in his career and was a truck driver by trade; he retired from Pella Corp. in 1999 after 15 years of service. Jim and Jean enjoyed wintering in Arizona for five winters after his retirement. Jim loved cars — he collected numerous cars and trucks through the years from a 1925 Dodge Bros. to a 1966 Thunderbird and was a member of the Rollin Oldies Car Club. He was a member of the First Christian Church and a past member of the American Legion and V.F.W. Jim’s family was always his first concern and joy; he loved his role as husband, father and grandfather and put his whole heart into fulfilling and exceeding his responsibilities.
Jim’s family includes his wife of 42 years, Jean Welsh, of Oskaloosa; son, David (Julee) Welsh, of Aberdeen, Scotland; daughter, Lisa (Darrin) Alderson, of Oskaloosa; three granddaughters: Ashlee Welsh and Rachel and Kelsey Alderson; two sisters: Peggy Husband, of Oskaloosa, and Vera Mealey, of Butte, Mont.; three brothers: Max, Rex and Jack Welch, all of Oskaloosa.
