DENNIS MICHAEL IRELAND

OSKALOOSA — Dennis Michael Ireland, 70, of Oskaloosa, ascended into Heaven on Oct. 14, 2012. 

He was the proud son of George and Meta Ankeny Ireland. He was raised in Cedar on the family farm. He graduated from the Cedar High School with the class of 1960. In 1964, he earned his B.A. in social sciences with an emphasis on history from William Penn College in Oskaloosa. In 1971, he received his master’s degree in secondary school administration from Northeast Missouri University in Kirksville, Mo. In 1964, he was united in marriage to Joanne Oberle-Buchwald. He later married Genell and later divorced, but remained as friends. Dennis taught school and coached basketball and baseball at Tri-County, Sabula, and YJB (Yale, Jamaica, Bagley) Schools in Iowa. While at Sabula, he served three years as the high school principle. The family then relocated to Jamaica, Iowa, where he served as the high school principle from 1976 – 1985 for the YJB Schools. He then moved to Arizona to be near his parents and to care for his ill father. There he managed retail businesses for 25 years. He returned to Oskaloosa in 2009, to be near his family.

His family includes: two daughters: Teresa Jahns, of Lost Nation, Ill., and Trisha Ireland, of Oskaloosa; four sons: Thomas Ireland of Windsor, Ontario, Canada, Timothy Ireland, of Aurelia, Theodore Ireland of Iowa, and Trent Ireland, of Gilbert, Ariz.; 21 grandchildren: Christina, Jason, Yvonne M., Joshua, Eric, Jenny, Jessica, Crystal, Dustin, Chelsea, Dana, Tyler, Nathan, Lindsay, Johnny, Annalee, Yvonne Marie, Trent Jr., Hannah, Jamison, and Jace; many great-grandchildren; his loving friend and care giver: Linda Crawford; a brother: Edward Ireland, of Sturgeon Bay, Wis.; and a sister: Patricia Uitermark, of Chandler, Ariz.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister: Joan Vint.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Oct. 17, at 11 a.m. at the New Hope Ministries Church (in the old Jefferson School building) in Oskaloosa with Steve Howe officiating with a fellowship to follow. Deepest appreciation and gratitude to the Lifehouse Congregation, Hospice and for the friendships he has shared in his life.
