DOROTHY JEAN VANDE LUNE BARNHOUSE

OCT. 15, 1927 — SEPT. 27, 2012

OSKALOOSA — Dorothy Jean (Vande Lune) Barnhouse, 84, passed away peacefully at the Serenity House in Oskaloosa, on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012. 

Dorothy was born Oct. 15, 1927, in Leighton, the daughter of Gerrit and Carrie Vander Linden Vande Lune. She graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1946. She then worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington, D.C. After returning to Oskaloosa, she was united in marriage to Robert Barnhouse, Sr. on Feb. 21, 1948, in Missouri. Bob died Nov. 24, 1995.

Dorothy worked for many years as the secretary at Webster Elementary School. She was a member of TTT Sorority, the former Elmhurst Country Club, and St. Paul Congregational United Church of Christ. She enjoyed reading, spending time with her many friends, and attending frequent family gatherings. Dorothy and her husband Barnie took wonderful trips to many sites in the United States and the Caribbean. One highlight of her travels was a trip to Europe with her sisters in 1984 to meet family in Holland.

Her family includes her sons Robert (Bob) Barnhouse Jr. and wife Vickie, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; William (Bill) Barnhouse and wife Sandie, of Charlotte, N.C.; six grandchildren, Laura Sauter (and Todd) Carriker, Jason Rogers, Kimberly Koogler (and Sean Franklin), J.D. (and Cindy) Koogler, and Amy Barnhouse and Bradford Barnhouse; five great-grandchildren: Kathryn, Grant, and Adam Carriker; Zane and Alanna Koogler; and sisters and brothers Bernice Walling, Blanche (and Leo) Denburger, all of Oskaloosa, Thomas (and Jean) Vande Lune in Texas, Glenn (and Sandra) Vande Lune in Oklahoma, and Charles (and Peggy) Vande Lune in Kentucky, and many nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Barbara Barnhouse Rogers, a brother, Arthur Vande Lune, and two sisters Lois Haynie and Joyce Jonker.

Visitation was held Sunday at the Bates Funeral Chapel after 11 a.m., and the family was present Sunday from 12:30 – 2:30 p.m. to greet family and friends. At 2:30 p.m. a procession formed to go to Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa for a Graveside Service at 2:50 p.m. with the Rev. Liz Colton officiating.
