GERALDINE TERPSTRA

OCT. 18, 1926 — AUG. 30, 2012

OSKALOOSA — Geraldine Terpstra, 85, of Oskaloosa, died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2012, at the MHP Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. 

She was born Oct. 18, 1926, in Marion County, the daughter of Peter and Rachel Vander Wert Visscher. At an early age, she made her Profession of Faith at Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa. On Oct. 22, 1944, she was united in marriage to Gerrit Terpstra at Unionville, Mo.; Gerrit died July 11, 2012. Early on they lived on the “S” curve north of Oskaloosa and ran a service station. They later moved to a farm. In 1958, they moved to their current farm northeast of Oskaloosa where Geraldine and Gerrit farmed for many years. Geraldine also hung wallpaper for many years in the area with Wilma (Terpstra) VerSteegh. She was a member of the Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa, neighborhood sewing club and card club. 

Her family includes, a son and his wife, Gary and Elaine Terpstra, of rural New Sharon; a daughter and her husband, Kathy and Scott Shaw, of New Sharon; a son in law, Gene Phillips, of Oskaloosa; three granddaughters, Suzanne Vander Wiel, Shelly (and Shawn) Serba, and Stacy (and Casey) Sammons; a grandson, Kyle (and Heather) Shaw; seven great-grandchildren, Cheyenne Shaw, Jaylin Vander Wiel, Gage Shaw, Colton Vander Wiel, Cyler Sammons, and Landyn Serba; brothers and sister-in-law, John and Charlea Terpstra, of Oskaloosa, and David Terpstra, of Mexico, Mo..

In addition to her husband, Geraldine was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter Judy Phillips; a sister, Reatha Edel; and a sister-in-law, Irene Terpstra.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 4,  at 10:30 a.m. at Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa with the Rev. Don DeGlopper officiating. There will be a family prayer Tuesday morning at 10:15 in the fellowship hall of the church. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Burial will be in Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. Visitation will begin Monday after 10 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel with the family present at the funeral chapel Monday from 6 – 8 p.m. to greet friends and relatives.
