ART JOHNSON

SEPT. 26, 1915 — JAN. 28, 2012 

OTTUMWA — Art Johnson, 96, of Ottumwa, died Saturday Jan. 28, 2012, at the Crystal Heights Care Center in Oskaloosa.

He was born Sept. 26, 1915, in Wapello County to William and Maude Wooden Johnson. He married Hazel Dougherty on Dec. 31, 1945, in Kansas City, Kan., She preceded him in death on Feb. 24, 1996. Art was a member of the Wapello County Historical Society, the Wapello County Genealogical Society, the VFW, the American Legion, Ottumwa Lodge No. 16, where he served as Past Master, AARP, Retired Officers Assoc., Gardeners of America, and the South East Iowa Garden Club. He was also involved with the CCC Camps at Lake Wapello. Art was a carpenter and owned A.M. Johnson Construction, Art also served in the United States Army during World War II with the 19th Armored Infantry Battalion 14th Armored Division; Art was involved in the campaign of Central Europe, some of his citations include American Theater Service Medal, European African Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. He served five years in active duty and 23 years with the Army Reserve retiring as a Lt. Col.

Surviving Art are one son, Tom (Sandy), of Oskaloosa, and one daughter Connie (Larry) Brinning, of Washington, Iowa, five grandchildren, Eric Reed, Brian Johnson, Ben Ramsey, Kristin Ramsey, Alex Ramsey and six great-grandchildren, Madelyn Johnson, Beau Johnson, Austin Reed, Aidan Reed, Max Reed, Luke Reed; also two brothers Chuck and Donald, one sister Nina McAlister, two special nieces, Emily Springer and Joyce Carnahan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, three brothers Harold, John, and William, four sisters Margaret Rounceville, Bertha Cavanaugh, Ruby Terrell, Rosa Majors.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1, at the Johnson Funeral Chapel with the Family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday evening.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, Feb. 2, at 10 a.m. at the McIntire Cemetery with Military services provided by Iowa Army National Guard.

In lieu of flowers the family request memorials be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Johnson Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
