OSKALOOSA — Shirley L. Vulysteke, 76, of Oskaloosa, died Sunday morning, July 8, 2012, at Mahaska Health Partnership in Oskaloosa. 

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 12, at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel with Pastor Dwayne Poe of the First Church of the Open Bible officiating. Burial will be in Forest Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral chapel; the family will be present from 5-7 p.m. to greet visitors. Memorial contributions may be made in her name and will be established at later a time.

Shirley Lee Vulysteke, daughter of Harlan Elmer and Flora Marie Watkins Denning, was born Aug. 8, 1935, in Eddyville. She was a 1953 graduate of Eddyville High School. She married Donald Johnson, June 5, 1954; to this union three children, Diana, Donald and Deborah, were born. They later divorced. May 24, 1986, she married Victor “Vic” Vulysteke at Lake Keomah State Park. Shirley worked a variety of jobs in Oskaloosa while raising her three children. Shirley was a cleaning contractor and for many years took care of the offices of Clow Valve Company. She retired in 1997. Shirley enjoyed being outdoors, she loved tending her flower garden, feeding the birds and fishing. She also enjoyed writing poetry and painting. Shirley cherished the time she could spend with her children and grandchildren. Shirley had a stroke in 2007, after which she made Oskaloosa Care Center her home; she will be missed by many friends and loving care givers.

Shirley’s family includes her children and their spouses: Donald Johnson, of Rose Hill, Diana (Richard) DeVore, of New Sharon, Deborah Smith, of Oskaloosa, Vickie (Nhoeuy) Ches, of Oskaloosa, Cindy Murphy, of Oskaloosa, Rachel Noel, of Belle Plaine, and Sandra Moranville, of Malcom; 18 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; a sister, Anna Glenn, of Eddyville; a brother, William (Pat) Denning, of Chattanooga, Tenn., and two special nieces, Linda and Saundra.

In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Vic; four brothers and four sisters; a son-in-law, Dennis Murphy; and a daughter-in-law, Edna Johnson.
