Merridy Patrick, 94, of Des Moines and formerly of Oskaloosa, died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012, at the Trinity Center in Des Moines.
She was born Friday, July 5, 1918, in Oskaloosa, the daughter of John and Nell Bennett Woar. She graduated from the Oskaloosa High School and then attended William Penn College and received her bachelor’s degree. Following graduation from William Penn, Merridy attended Drake University and earned her master’s degree. Merridy then taught English, math, and physical education in Carroll, Coon Rapids, Burlington, and lastly, in Oskaloosa where she retired. Following retirement, Merridy went to Korea to live with a family to teach their son the English language so that he could come to America to go to college. She enjoyed bowling, attending the quilting guild at her church and loved helping people, especially children.
Merridy’s family includes: a special niece: Conchita (and Mike) Johnson, of Ankeny; a sister: Peggy (and Jack) White, of Grove, Okla.; many nieces and nephews; and her cat: Sophie.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; 4 brothers: Carl, Bob, John, and Fred Woar; 3 sisters: Marjorie Woar, Catherine Boortz, and Jean McIntosh.
A graveside memorial service will be held Friday, Oct. 26, at 3 p.m. at Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa with the Rev. Andrea Brownlee officiating. A procession will form at 2:40 p.m. at the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa for those wishing to go to the cemetery. As was her wish her body has been cremated and no visitation is planned at this time.
