Minnie Julia Houk, 88, of Oskaloosa, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, while being cared for at Crystal Heights Care Center in Oskaloosa. She was born on April 15, 1924, at Leighton, Iowa, the daughter of Bert and Jennie DeJong Slings. She attended grade school at Iowa Central Country School. She never attended High School, but achieved her GED on June 6, 1972. As a teenager, she was employed at Bill Gould Fruit Market, where she met Freeman Houk and on Jan. 1, 1942, Minnie was united in marriage to Freeman Houk in Lancaster, Missouri and he died Aug. 3, 2008. She delighted in caring for her home and family, she was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Minnie cleaned houses for several people in the Oskaloosa area. She enjoyed attending bible study at her church, helping the Republican Central Committee, and the Lincoln township clerk. She also delighted in working at the Nelson Pioneer Farm festival. Minnie and Freeman wintered in Laferia, Tx for 19 years where she loved helping as an aide in the elementary schools. She and her family were members of the Bethel Christian Reformed Church. She was a kind person who enjoyed caring for people in need of help.
Her family includes her 4 children: Ron (& Marilou) Houk of Pella, Don (& Carol) Houkof Oskaloosa, Marcia (& Bill) McCombs of Oskaloosa, and Judy Smith of Cedar Rapids; 16 grandchildren: Danny, Tamera, Tim and Jeff Raley, Renee Engbers, Randy Houk, Rhonda DeWard, Teri Swank, Rob Houk, Billy Jaron, Tom, and Ted McCombs, Patty Linville, Missy Shrader and Jen Chesmore; 55 great grandchildren; 11 great great grandchildren; a sister: Marilyn Van Wyk of Oskaloosa; 3 sister-in-laws: Pearl Bruner of Leon, Iowa, Betty (& Jim) Jackson, and Marian Slings of Oskaloosa; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a daughter: Joyce; two brothers: Hubert and Art Slings; two sisters: Edna Boender and Jenella Stull; 3 sister-in-laws: Hattie Slings, Merle Draper, and Joy Ilene Houk; 6 brother-in-laws: John Boender, Sam Stull, Jr., Carroll Van Wyk, Raymond Houk, Bill Bruner, and Keith Draper; and son-in-law: Danny Raley; a great grandson: Josh Raley; and a great great granddaughter: Aala Ann Raley.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Dec. 10, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at the Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Oskaloosa with Revered Del Bittner officiating. A family prayer service will be held in the fellowship hall of the church at 10:15 a.m. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Leighton. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will begin Sunday after 10 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel Sunday from 2 – 4 p.m. to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to Mahaska Hospice or the Oskaloosa Christian Grade School.
