ROBERT WEST

APRIL 21, 1937 — JAN. 13, 2013

OSKALOOSA — Robert West, 75, of Oskaloosa, died Sunday afternoon, Jan. 13, 2013, at Mahaska Health Partnership in Oskaloosa. 

As was his wish, cremation has been accorded and no funeral services will be held. His ashes will be scattered off the coast of Hawaii, as his wife Junko’s ashes were scattered. Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel is entrusted with his arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the V.F.W.

Robert “Bobby” Eugene West, son of Clyde C. and Dorothy M. Barnes West, was born, April 21, 1937, in Oskaloosa. He was a 1955 graduate of Oskaloosa High School. June 4, 1955, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served 20 years, retiring June 24, 1974. He was united in marriage to Junko Hinohara, Oct. 31, 1961, in Yokohama, Japan. After returning to Oskaloosa, he attended Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, where he studied the building trades for 2 years. Following his education, he started Bob’s remodeling, doing carpentry work in the Oskaloosa area until his retirement in 1989. At that time, he purchased half interest in the “Winds”; he owned and operated it until 1993. Bob was a member of the V.F.W., the American Legion and the Eagles. He continued to enjoy woodworking for many years after his retirement.  

Bob’s family includes his daughters and a son-in-law, Elizabeth and Jeff Devitt, of Tacoma, Wash., and Bonnie West, of Seattle, Wash.; grandchildren: Robert Forrest Devitt and Margaret Devitt; brothers and a sister-in-law: Clyde D. West, of Henryetta, Okla., and Jim and Viola West, of Florida.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Junko.
