NEW SHARON —
It was all North Mahaska Monday night when the Warhawks hosted Tri-County.
North Mahaska romped to a 25-10 win in the first game, then put the Trojans down 25-17 in game two and put the match on ice with a 25-6 pounding in game three.
The North Mahaska serving was the key to the match and the Warhawks rained 29 ace serves on the Trojans. It was obvious that Tri-County could not dig up the Warhawk serves, so that meant that they were unable to get the pass out to set up the hitters.
North Mahaska also had some struggles with the pass and the set.
“We have been struggling to find the right combinations,” Warhawks coach Alisha Briggs said. “We have to improve our passing in order to get the set right. If we can get the set, we have some hitters that can put the ball down. But tonight, serving was the big part of the match. They were unable to get the serve back and we scored a lot of easy points.”
In game one, the Warhawks pulled away from a 10-7 lead with a 15-2 run to take the game. Big in that game was the serving of Jordan Ferguson, Nicole Brand and Carissa McBirnie. McBirnie fired five ace serves across the net for the final five points.
North Mahaska raced away to a 15-6 lead in game two behind the serving of Brand and Rachel Sherburne, but then the Trojans found a little spark. Two kills by Sara Gragg and a five-point service run by Hazel Kitzman fueled a surge to cut the deficit to 20-13, but the Warhawks regained the momentum and polished off the game.
In game three, the Warhawks used a five-point service run by Jaylin DeJong to take a 7-2 lead and then finished the match with a 16-1 run. Sarah Bowen finished the game with a nine-point service run that featured eight aces.
The Warhawks raise their record to 4-3 and 2-1 in the South Iowa Cedar League. Next up will be a big SICL battle at Montezuma Thursday night. On Saturday, they will host their own tournament.
