Lady Statesmen fall 7-1 to College of Saint Mary

OMAHA, Neb. — A rough first half doomed the William Penn women’s soccer team in a 7-1 non-conference loss to College of Saint Mary (Neb.) Tuesday.

The Lady Statesmen (1-8) kept the Lady Flames (3-6) off the scoreboard for the first 13 minutes of action, but once the home team found netting they seemed unstoppable.

Six first-half goals were tallied before William Penn finally got on the board itself on a Jordan Davis unassisted score at the 43:04 mark. It was her second goal of 2012.

College of Saint Mary, who owned a 37-8 edge in shots, added one more goal in the second 45 minutes. Kristine Wagner paced the Lady Statesmen offense with four shots.

Amber Klootwyk and Ali Parks each managed four saves in the setback.

“I was very disappointed with our focus and intensity as we simply did not show up for the first 45 minutes,” Penn coach Willie McGowan said. “Just as we thought we had begun to turn the corner, we plummet back to square one. It is frustrating to see a lack of heart and passion in our players, especially when we can see the potential of this team.”

“With conference coming up, we will have to go back to the basics and see who emerges and really wants to wear this uniform,” McGowan added.

William Penn opens Midwest Collegiate Conference action Saturday by hosting Mount Mercy at 5 p.m.
