BETTENDORF —
Mahaska United entered the BSA Octoberfest, a Premier/Select level 1 tournament held in Bettendorf last weekend vs teams and players from several states, with a undefeated 19-0 record as the only level 3 rec team and emerged still undefeated with a hard fought2-1 championship victory over a previously undefeated season of the BSA Dynamo on Sunday afternoon.
Group play started with a 2-1 win and ended the undefeated season of the BSA Typhoon. Mahaska United’s next effort was a 4-1 victory over the Geneseo Whiplash from Illinois, followed by a dominant 5-0 performace over Moline Hotspur, to advance into the championship match vs. the undefeated BSA Dynamo who lead the tournament in goals scored in group play with 22.
“Our boys could have been easly intimidated by the roster and physical size of the Dynamo, but held true to a team motto — “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight but the size of the fight in the dog,” Coach Loren Lammers said.
Mahaska United entered the pitch with determination and heart that produced a goal early in the match by team captian Ethan Olivas followed by another Olivas goal in the first half to hold a 2-0 lead entering halftime. Mahaska United continued a team effort to play counter attacking offense with soild disciplined defense while marking man to man the strikers of the explosive scoring dynamo in the second half and held them to one goal to earn a 2-1 championship trophy victory.
“We knew the challange our boys would face in a tournament of this level would require a individual united effort to produce good team results and thats what they gave each other,” Lammers said.
Mahaska United’s next goal to add to their 23-0 undefeated fall 2012 season will be to attend the Shoot the Moon Tournament in Adel this weekend. Group play starts at 8 p.m. with a match vs Carlisle on Friday followed by Saturday’s matches against Bondurant and DCG Cross Fire. The final is on Sunday for two teams with top points earned in group stage play.
