OSKALOOSA —
The Statesmen basketball team rolled over Central Christian (Mo.) 140-53 Saturday afternoon, and in the process broke numerous program marks as the William Penn Thanksgiving Holiday Classic concluded.
William Penn (11-0) remained perfect by setting the following records:
• Most points in a half (79); previous record was 72 set last year against Grinnell.
• Most points in a game (140); previous record was 137 set last year against Grinnell.
• Most 3-pointers made in a game (26); previous record was 21 set Friday night against Crossroads.
• Most 3-pointers attempted in a game (48); previous record was 46 set last year against AIB.
The Statesmen also reached 100-point mark for the sixth time this year and are now averaging 105.5 points. Their 87-point win was also the second-largest margin of victory ever, trailing only the 94-point advantage in a 128-34 decision against Nebraska Christian during the 2007-2008 season.
It is very possible, though, that at least the scoring records will fall less than 24 hours from now as William Penn faces high-scoring Grinnell Sunday (4 p.m. tip-off). It will be the Pioneers’ first game since Jack Taylor broke a national collegiate record with 138 points Tuesday versus Faith Baptist Bible. The school record for most times over the century mark (seven times last year) is also likely to be tied tomorrow.
The Saints (1-6) battled side by side in the early going, trailing 22-15 just 5:42 into the afternoon. The Statesmen simply overwhelmed Central Christian from there, however, scoring 28 unanswered and never led by less than 30 again.
William Penn made 53-of-86 field-goal attempts (61.6 percent), including a 26-of-48 showing from behind the arc. The defense was obviously solid, limiting the Saints to just 27.6 percent overall (16.1 percent on 3-pointers).
Eight players surpassed the double-digit mark, including 18 from both Brandon Beasley and Taylor Stoutner. Stoutner led all players with six trifectas.
Blake Walker and Lamonte Jenkins each finished with 16 points, while Keith Steffeck poured in 15.
Jenkins, with a game-high 11 rebounds, and Steffeck, with 10 boards, both recorded double-doubles. William Penn pounded the boards with a 65-25 advantage.
Kevin Fay, with 14 points, and Davis Spielbauer, with 12 points, each connected on four shots from behind the arc.
James Devlin was the last player in double figures with 10 points. He was impressive in other areas as well, pacing the navy and gold in assists (13) and steals (4). The Statesmen nearly broke the assists record that was set last night as they tallied 37 in that column (record is 41).
Ross Howe added seven points with two blocks, while Arman Rasul contributed six.
