Penn softball splits with Baker in non-conference double dip

OLATHE, Kan. — The William Penn softball team awoke from an offensive slumber with a big showing in the nightcap to split a doubleheader against Baker (Kan.) Tuesday.

The 21st-ranked Lady Statesmen (12-3) lost the first game 4-3, but then rebounded for a 13-3 five-inning victory in the second contest.

Penn, going with a different look in the opener, outhit the Wildcats 9-6, but had troubles bringing baserunners home, leaving seven on base.

Ashley Stream scored the day’s first run in the top of the first off an RBI single by Cassie Ward.

Baker (6-10) responded with three runs of its own in the bottom half of the frame. The Lady Statesmen fought back with one run in the fourth when Stream singled home Whitney Reber and another run in the seventh when Stream scored again, this time on an error. The Wildcats committed three fielding mistakes to just one by Penn.

Baker still had a little left in the tank, however, and scored the game-winning run with just one out in the bottom half of the seventh to claim the first contest.

Stream led the offensive effort, going 3-for-4 with two runs, while Ward (2-for-4), Reber (2-for-3), and Andrea Rensberger (2-for-3) also had multiple-hit showings.

Lauryn Northup took the loss, falling for the first time this year (2-1). The junior allowed four runs on six hits, while striking out five against three walks.

It took a few innings, but the Lady Statesmen, with their normal lineup back in place, finally erupted in the nightcap. Courtesy of nine hits (16 overall), Penn scored 10 runs in the fourth frame to cruise to the win.

Stream, Tyanna Helton, with two RBI, Krystina Lorah and Leah Mork all had RBI base hits in the fourth, but Ward highlighted the inning by hammering a pinch-hit grand slam over the fence for her first home run as a Lady Statesmen. Mork also left the park for her second roundtripper of the year.

Helton and Kara Atkins were both 2-for-3 in the onslaught, while Stream, Lorah, Khyia Lewis and Mork all finished 2-for-4 at the dish.

Helton crossed home plate a game-high three times, while Mork and Atkins both scored twice. Ward led all players with four RBI and Helton, Lorah, and Mork added two RBI apiece.

Hannah Lugar picked up the win, limiting the Wildcats to three runs on just two hits. The sophomore (6-1) struck out two batters with just one walk.

Penn travels to Lebanon, Ill., to compete in the McKendree Tournament Friday and Saturday. On Friday, the Lady Statesmen face host and 25th-ranked McKendree at 11 a.m. and Harris Stowe State (Mo.) at 3 p.m. On Saturday, Penn meets up with St. Mary (Kan.) at 3 p.m. and Kansas Wesleyan at 5 p.m.
