OSKALOOSA —
The Southern Iowa Speedway has continued to make it a family friendly mid-week racing venture and this week was no different story.
This week was Halloween in June with trick-or-treating before the races, a costume contest for adults and kids with bikes given-away in five classes. Also another twist was a stock car Australian pursuit and sport mod King of the Hill added to the action.
The John’s Tree Service Sport Mod King of the Hill had 16 drivers competing, but it was Jesse Sobbing who made the 3 1/2-hour pull from Glenwood to take the win over Scott Davis from Madrid in the final round to take an extra $100 home. Davis would earn a free pit pass for next week as would Bill Gibson and Josh Modde.
In the Stock Car Australian Pursuit, it was Damon Murty and Brad Pinkerton up front the entire race. Unfortunately, because the last car every lap was eliminated it would be Murty leading the last lap and taking the win. The winner of the Drivers coupons giveaway was IMCA Hobby Stock driver Bobby Greene of Eddyville.
The first feature of the night was the Autocrafters/Whalen Racing IMCA Sport Compacts and it was Bill Whalen Jr. leading all eight laps and holding off a late race challenge by Merv Chandler to take the win. Whalen had said earlier in the night that he was going to go out and win in honor of a racing friend Tim Sands, who died last week. For Whalen, it was his second win of the season in Oskaloosa; Chandler would finish second, Chuck Fullencamp was third, John Whalen was fourth and Ronald McCish was fifth.
In the Tracy Elevator IMCA Hobby Stocks it, was Jamie Songer taking the early race lead, but unfortunately, the first race caution came out on lap 4 when Mike Hughes came to a stop in turn 2. On the restart, Songer would be passed by Greene and Mark Fee, Greene would take over the lead with Fee in second. Another race caution would come out on lap 10 for debris on the front straightaway, and two laps again, this time because Dustin Griffiths would fly off the back stretch and get turned around and try to come back on the track. Shannon Anderson would work his way up to second and tried several attempts to get by Greene but Greene would hold off Anderson to take the win. Hughes would work his way back up to third, Fee was fourth and Songer was fifth.
The Musco Lighting IMCA Modifieds would see Andrew Schroeder jump to the early lead, but after two laps were completed, the caution came out for Dakota Hayden getting in the turn 2 wall. On the restart, it was Jacob Murray taking over the lead and then Schroeder would encounter some issues and head pit side. Murray would see the yellow come out again on lap 4 when Tyler Cale and Scott Dickey would get together on the front straightaway. Murray went on to take his fourth and second straight win at Oskaloosa. Josh Foster was second, Cayden Carter was third, Mark Widmar was fourth and Brandon Banks was fifth.
Next up was the Pyramid Graphics and Sports IMCA SportMods and it was Ben Kates from Tonganoxie, Kan., leading lap, but on lap 2, it was Jason Hall sneaking by for the lead. Hall would lead and start to pull away until Jason McDaniel and Sobbing chased him down late in the race. Sobbing would take the lead on lap 13 and go on to take his fourth win of the regular season and fifth overall at Oskaloosa. McDaniel, Hall, Kates and Brett Lowry round out the top 5.
The final feature of the night was the Carter’s Manufacturing IMCA Stock Cars and it was Pinkerton once again taking the lead. Pinkerton would have to deal with Colt Mather throughout the entire event and when the caution came out on lap 11 for Murty going off the back straightaway, Pinketon would now have to deal with Nathan Wood and Matt Greiner. Pinkerton would continue to hold of the challenges when the yellow came out again on lap 13 for Todd Phillips going off the back straightaway. Pinkerton would go on and lead the remaining three laps and take the win. Mather would finish second, Wood was third, Greiner was fourth and Alan Van Gorp was fifth.
Next Wednesday night will be Musco Sports Lighting Mid-Season Championship Night featuring the return of the IMCA Deery Brothers Summer Series to the half mile. Also racing will be the IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA SportMods, IMCA Hobby Stocks and IMCA Sport Compacts. Hot laps are at 7 p.m. and racing at 7:30 p.m.
