CARLISLE —
Carlisle pitcher Kenzie Flaws silenced the bats of Oskaloosa as the third-ranked Wildcats posted a 10-1 win over the Indians in a Class 4A regional semifinal contest Saturday night.
One game after scoring 10 runs on 12 hits in a win over Pella on Thursday night, the Indians mustered only three hits and a single run against Flaws.
The senior Wildcat pitcher sat down 13 consecutive batters in one stretch after getting in a minor jam in the opening inning.
Senior Kenzie Gott began the game with a walk and sophomore Kelsie Tomlin slapped an infield single, moving courtesy runner Kylie Hill to second. The runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by senior Mac McGraw. Junior Shawni Wills bounced out to Carlisle shortstop Taylor Davis as Tomlin got caught in a rundown, allowing Hill to score the run.
After that, Flaws (26-7) was tough on the Oskaloosa batters the rest of the way, giving up a fifth-inning single to Callie Arnold and a two-out single to Kesley Kollasch in the seventh.
“We got the start we wanted, exactly what we wanted,” Oskaloosa coach Jay Harms said. “I talked to (Carlisle) coach (Jim) Flaws and he was really concerned when we got out and got the momentum there. We knew it was going to be a battle.
“We had to make plays. We knew they were going to hit the ball because they are so aggressive. We didn’t quite make the plays when we needed to and opened the door for them. They got on a roll.”
Flaws told Harms that the game plan was to make Gott (19-5) throw a lot of pitches and wear her down and Harms said Gott was “gassed” and did not have one of her better outings.
One player, besides Flaws, who had a good outing was he batterymate, Elin Landgren.
Landgren collected three of the 13 hits off Gott with an RBI single in the second, a three-run double in the third and another double in the fifth as Carlisle (31-8) got out to a comfortable 7-1 lead.
That was more than enough support for Flaws as she coaxed 11 groundouts from the Indians, who close the season at 23-13.
“You can win many games when you get three hits,” Harms said. “We were hoping for a little better showing tonight.
“We got out 3-0 on her the first time out and she went through a faze that she just sat us right down. She threw the ball well, keeping the ball down and moved it around well.”
