CEDAR FALLS —
Paced by a record-breaking and national-qualifying showing by Meghan Foster, the William Penn women's indoor track and field team fared well in its first post-holiday break action at the UNI Panther Open Saturday.
Foster was the squad's top placer overall, taking fourth in the shot put with a toss of 41-7.25. She was also a top finisher in the weight throw, placing seventh at 45-8.
The freshman's shot put was impressive for many other reasons as it also broke the previous record of Ashley Lyons (40-0.75, 2011) and met the NAIA's “B” qualifying standard. She also re-set her own weight throw record, previously at 45-2.25.
Jazmine Epps was also twice in the top 10, finishing fifth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.39 seconds and 10th in the 200-meter dash at 28.33 seconds.
Long jumper Emily Giles took sixth with a distance of 15-11.5, while high jumpers Epps and Alora Simmons both cleared the pole at 4-9 to tie for eighth.
Alexis Swinney gave the Lady Statesmen two high finishers in the 200, being the top runner in seventh place at 28.06 seconds. Fatoumata Samura also placed in the top ten, earning ninth place in the 600-meter run at 1:45.14.
“This was an outstanding effort by everyone today,” Penn coach Allen Friesen said. “We broke records on both sides and that is a testament to both how hard our coaches have worked to prepare our athletes and how well our athletes responded.”
William Penn travels to Ames next Friday and Saturday to compete in the Iowa State Open.
