STORM LAKE —
Joao Vicente crushed the opposition on his way to a title at the Buena Vista Open Saturday.
Vicente won all five of his matches to claim the 133-pound crown. His first win came via fall, while his next four, including an 11-1 victory over top-seeded Austin Mogg of Concordia (Neb.), were all by major decision. The freshman, whose title is his first at the collegiate level, opened the day as the No. 2 seed.
Joe Sumner also placed, taking fifth at 174 pounds. The junior finished with a 5-2 record, highlighted by two falls and one major decision. He also upset the top seed, doing so in his second match of the day.
157-pounder Ishmael Rempson had a big day as well, finishing 4-2 with two falls.
A trio of Statesmen won three matches Saturday. 141-pounder Brad Watson, with two falls, and 149-pounders Lane Colwell, with one fall and one major decision, and Charlton Benjamin, with one fall, all accomplished the feat.
David Jones, with two falls at heavyweight, and Christian Padilla, with one fall at 165 pounds, were both 2-2.
141-pounder Jay Fresh, 197-pounder Brandon Blanchard and heavyweight Nathan Merical all picked up a victory via fall, while 149-pounder Marshawn Lacy and 197-pounder Mark Gadson were also victorious at the tournament.
William Penn is off until after the holidays. The Statesmen return to action by hosting the William Penn Open Saturday, Jan. 5, in the Penn Activity Center.
