Mahaffey takes home track championship in High School division at ERP
EDDYVILLE — The 2009 Eddyville Raceway Park season for the High School division came to a close Friday night.
Mike Mahaffey from Ottumwa was looking to keep his lead and make all seven finals of the season. After the first round, Mahaffey had claimed the championship when Kayla Williams from Oskaloosa went out.
In the finals Mahaffey went against Kaleb Brinegar from Moulton. Brinegar had the better reaction time, but at the finish line, broke out giving Mahaffey his fourth win of the season.
Saturday despite the heat saw a good crowd show up for the races.
In the Sportsman class, Mike Wymore from Oskaloosa went against Jesse Pitts from Ankeny. Wymore claimed the win with the better reaction time and running closer to his dial-in.
Jr. Dragster had Kaila Wheeldon from University Park racing against Kamden Knudson from Indianola. Wheeldon got the win when she ran closer to her dial-in and had the better reaction time to claim her first win.
In the Pure Street, another Mahaffey made it to the finals, Tony from Ottumwa, going against Robert Blackford from Lineville. Tony claim the win as he had the better reaction time and ran closer to his dial-in.
Pro class had Dennis Breeding going against Tim Vanantwerp from Unionville. Breeding had a great pass as he ran right on his dial-in, but the great run wasn’t needed as Vanantwerp, who was chasing down Breeding, couldn’t wait for the green light and tripped the red light giving the win to Breeding.
George Garwood from Norwalk went against David Marshall from Carlisle in the Super Pro class. Both drivers were dialed the same making for a heads-up race. Marshall had the better reaction time, but at the finish line, Garwood ran closer to his dial-in and was able to claim the win.
Scott Kositeky from Cedar Rapids faced off against Chad Slattery from Palo in the 10.5 class. Kositeky had the slower elapsed time, but a much better reaction time was enough for him to claim the win.
This weekend Eddyville Raceway Park will be closed both Friday and Saturday. Racing will resume next weekend with the World Fuel Altered Nationals.
