OSKALOOSA —
The 17th Annual Stock Car Shootout was held at the Southern Iowa Speedway sponsored by Doll Distributing/Budweiser.
The fans packed the stands on a very hot 100-degree evening to be treated to some hot action at the Mahaska County Monster. It was the Fourth of July but official 82 cars signed in to do battle on the nation’s holiday and with some big money on the line in all classes and the fans was treated to a 3-year-old little girl from New Sharon Addison Vanderbeek, who sang the National Anthem.
The first feature of the night was the Autocrafters/Whalen Racing IMCA Sport Compacts 8 lap feature. Merv Chandler would lead all eight laps in root to his eightth win of the season at Southern Iowa Speedway. Bill Whalen Jr., Larry Hopkins, Mike Nehring and Duayne Herb would round out the top 5.
Next up in the Tracy Elevator IMCA Hobby Stock feature, it was Craig Brown jumped out to the early lead and appeared the win but Shannon Anderson had worked his way up to second on lap 8 and started to chase down Brown. Anderson would catch Brown and make the pass for the lead on lap 13. Anderson would lead the remaining laps to take his sixth of the season at SIS. Brown would settle for second, Dustin Griffiths was third, Mike Hughes was fourth and Kevin Fee was fifth.
In the Pyramid Graphics and Sports IMCA SportMod feature, it was Carter Vandenberg taking the lead but a caution on lap 2 that would result in a red flag when Jack Housley would get upside down in turn 4 and collected Cody Hillgartner and Randy Krampe. Housley would be OK, but his car wouldn’t look so good. When the race resumed, Vandenberg would have do deal with Curtis Vandwerwal and Tony Johnson. Vanderwal would grab the lead away from Vandenberg meanwhile Sobbing would get by Johnson for third. Sobbing would get by Vandenberg for second on the next lap meanwhile Bryan Weyer would get by Johnson for fourth. Sobbing set his sights on trying to chase down Vanderwal and would do so to take over the lead on lap 12 and lead the remaining laps to take his fifth win of the season at Osky. Vanderwal, Weyer, Vandenberg and Jim Gillenwater completed out the top 5.
Carter’s Manufacturing IMCA Stock Cars 25 lap Budweiser Stock Car Shootout feature was up next. Zack VanderBeek would start on the outside front row and lead all the laps. VanderbBeek would win by a full straightaway over Brad Pinkerton, who came across the line in second. But in post-race tech inspection, VanderBeek was disqualified for an illegal frame giving the win over to Pinkerton. Jay Schmidt, Matt Greiner, Jeff Anderson and Larry Karcz Jr. would round out the top 5. Anderson would be the overall Stock Car Shootout Champion.
The final feature was the Musco Lighting IMCA Modified feature and it was Cayden Cart leading the first three laps before the Hartford Hustler Jacob Murray would get by and take the lead. Murray would go on and take his fifth win of the season at Oskaloosa. Carter finished second, Richie Gustin was third, David Murray was fourth and Scott Dickey was fifth.
