Indians break 4 school records at district meet

The Oskaloosa Herald

MOUNT PLEASANT — The Oskaloosa track teams had a very successful performance at a Class 3A Regional/District meet Thursday night.

The Indians will have representatives to this week’s state meet in 18 events as they set four school records in the process.

Oskaloosa was fourth in the girls division with 84.5 points while the boys were second with 118 points.

The girls’ school record came in the 4x400-meter relay as the foursome of MaKena Veldhuizen, Kayley Keller, Whitney Newman and Brooke VanHouweling  ran 4:05.96 to break the 1999 record of 4:08.92 set by Megan Sash, Amber Doud, Andrea Jones and Candi Jones.

Also advancing to the state meet, which begins Thursday in Des Moines, are the shuttle hurdle, distance medley and 4x200 relays along with Payton VanWaardhuizen (400), Allie Christenson (100 hurdles), VanHouweling (800) and Taylor Richardson (long jump).

The Oskaloosa boys eclipsed three records and had the freshman record in the 1,600 broken as well.

Breaking school records were the 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams of Dillon Daniel, Dalton Shaull, Adam Rowley and Drew Richmond as they ran 43.56 in the 4x100 and 1:01.50 in the 4x200.

The third school record came in the 400 hurdles and Roy Best stopped the clock in 53.96.

The two relays and Best will compete in the state meet along with Andrew Landgrebe in the 100 and 200, Richmond in the long jump, Kalob Gist in the shot put and the shuttle hurdle and 4x400 relays.

Skylar DeJong lowered the freshman record in the 1,600 to the new mark of 4:44.44, but just missed getting a spot in the state meet.
