OSKALOOSA —
Oskaloosa, ranked 15th in Class 4A, had a chance to share the Little Hawkeye Conference title if it would beat Norwalk on Senior Night Tuesday.
The Indians did not let the opportunity slip away as they swept the Warriors 25-14, 25-15, 25-12 to claim a share of the LHC championship along with Grinnell. Both teams close the conference season at 5-1 while the Indians are 18-16 overall.
“We came out and did what we needed to do and we got our share of the conference championship,” Oskaloosa coach Jennifer Comfort said.
Oskaloosa got off a bit slowly in the opening set, trailing 3-0 early on. But the serving of senior Kena Veldhuizen, one of nine players and manager honored prior to the match, went on a serving spree to set the tone for the rest of the night.
With the set tied at 10-all, Veldhuizen served nine straight points as Norwalk had several hitting errors as junior Kailyn Risher and seniors Shawni Wills and Taylor Crawford picked up kills to put Oskaloosa on top for good.
“She does a good job for us defensively and it’s nice to see her step up and be able to score some points off her serve,” Comfort said of Veldhuizen, who missed just two of her 23 service attempts.
Veldhuizen duplicated her serving prowess in the second set as she recorded the five consecutive points on four Norwalk hitting errors and a kill by Wills, who led the Indians with 12 kills. That spurt increased Oskaloosa’s advantage to 22-13 and it went on to take a 2-0 set alead.
Another six-point serving run by Veldhuizen in the final set put the Indians within six points of closing out the match, which ended on a over-the-hed tip by senior Allie Christenson.
The Indians begin regional tournament play Oct. 25 against the winner of Carlisle and Indianola in Oskaloosa.
