OSKALOOSA —
For the first time this month, the Oskaloosa football team got to hit each other in game action.
The Indians held their annual Old Shoe Game Friday night at the Lacey Sports Complex Stadium.
The Maroon team used first-half touchdowns from Mason Wisse and Tyce Sarver to overtake the White team 12-8 to claim the Old Shoe Trophy.
Oskaloosa coach Mark Schilb said there were two things he liked about the scrimmage.
“Everybody got in and nobody got hurt,” he said. “Everybody got a chance to show us what they got and got their feet wet. Also, we had no major injuries.
“We had two quarterbacks (Jesse VanDalen and Austin Redlich) who did OK. We’re putting the ball in their hands differently. More of a quarterback position and I thought both of them played real well.”
The Indians, who begin the season this Friday night on the road at Indianola, have discarded the single-wing offense of a year ago and will go with a multiple-set offense, primarily using the I-formation.
The White team got the ball first and promptly gave the ball away as Jordan Lowry pounced the a fumble by Keoki Gibson to give the Maroon squad the ball at the White team’s 20.
It didn’t take the Maroon team long to capitalize on the turnover as Wisse rambled in from 14 yards out for the first score of the night.
There was no further scoring until about the 2-minute mark of the first 20-minute half when the Maroon team went on an eight-play, 73-yard drive that featured the passing of Redlich.
The senior completed three of four passes for 46 yards with the final 23 yards coming a beautifully thrown pass to Sarver with 2:08 left in the half and a 12-0 cushion.
The White team certainly did not want to go without scoring at least one time in the scrimmage and it did not go unrewarded.
A 34-yard run by Andrew Landgrebe on the first play following a fumble recovery by Gibson near midfield placed the ball at the 15-yard line of the Maroon. Runs by Landgrebe and Nate VanVeldhuizen were followed by an eight-yard reception from VanDalen to Spencer Medlin to set up Landgrebe’s 1-yard plunge with 5:19 remaining that closed out the scoring.
Schilb was pleased with how balanced the teams were with the White team had a 13-yard advantage passing the ball while the Maroon team outrushed the White squad by six yards.
“I liked how our balanced attack came out here and were throwing. We had a lot of positives in the passing game. That’s going to help us down the road.”
