Mike Wymore holds on for third Sportsman title at ERP
EDDYVILLE — The 2009 point season came to a close Saturday at Eddyville Raceway Park for the regular classes. Despite the early morning rain and the threat of rain throughout the day, races were completed.
The closest race for the championship had to be for the Sportsman class. There were five drivers who had the chance of claiming the championship, depending on how far they went and the others didn’t.
In the first round, current point leader Mike Wymore from Oskaloosa, looking for his third straight championship, went against Denis Currier from Leighton, who was in fifth place. Currier made use of a slightly better reaction time and take the win over Wymore, which open the door for the other racers. In the second round, only Wayne Carder from Agency was able to catch Wymore. Also advancing was Wymore, who bought back in. If racers lose in the first round, they can buy back and race not for points but just for the money.
The third round came and Wymore and Carter were paired up. Theer were only two points separating the two racers. Whomever won the round, won the championship. The race was over at the starting line as Carter left too soon, tripping the red light by just .005 and Wymore was able to hang on for his third championship.
In the finals, it was father, Mike Wymore vs. son, Ben Wymore from University Park. Both drivers had almost identical reaction times, but at the finish line, Mike went too fast and broke out, giving Ben his first win of the season. Twenty-two points separated first through sixth place.
Tim Sparks from University Park went against Bob Bash from Indianola in the Pro class. Sparks took the win with a better reaction time and running closer to his dial-in then Bash did.
In the Jr. Dragster class there were three in the hunt for the championship. In the first round, Chelsea Bacon from Fort Dodge lost. Then it came down to Chad Bacon from Fort Dodge going against Robbie Massey from Des Moines. Again, whomever won this race would get the championship. The race was over at the starting line as Chad tripped the red light and Massey claimed the championship.
In the finals of the Jr. Dragster class was Chris Labs from Center Point going against Dalton Dorsett from Panora. Labs made use of a better reaction time and running closer to his dial-in to claim the win.
In the Jr. Dragster Consi, it was brother vs, sister as the Bacon family made the finals again. Both was dialed the same so making for a heads-up race. Both racers broke out, but the race was already over as Chelsea tripped the red light. giving Chad the win.
The Jr. Dragster All Star Run-off had Labs going against Chad Bacon. Both drivers had almost identical reaction times at the finish line as Labs ran closer to his dial-in and claimed the win.
Super Pro saw Gary Shearer from Eddyville going against Corey Johnson from Middletown. Shearer had a great .002 reaction time, but it wasn’t needed as Johnson tripped the red light, giving the win to Shearer, which was icing on the cake as he also claimed the track championship.
Pure Street had Tony Mahaffey from Agency going against Jesse Bronson from Columbia, Mo. The race was over at the starting line as Bronson tripped the red light giving the win to Mahaffey.
Also on hand was the 10.5 cars making up a race that had been cancelled earlier in the season. This class is a heads-up pro tree class and require a rear tire no wider then 10.5 inches. In the finals, Scott Kositzky from Cedar Rapids went against Brett Meier from Bondurant. The race was over at the finish line as Meier left too soon, tripping the red light and giving the win to Kositky.
Although the point season is over racing is still going on through October. This Friday will be regular test and tune plus midnight madness. Saturday will be a fun day with two gambler races.
