Another silver for Lady Statesmen golfers

JOLIET, Ill. — The Lady Statesmen linksters fought through terrible weather to produce yet another strong performance at the St. Francis Fall Classic Friday and Saturday.

With temperatures only reaching the 50s, William Penn placed second out of five teams with a two-day tally of 679 (340-339) at the par-71 Inwood Golf Club. Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) won the team crown at 668 (333-335), while Gwen Holmes of ONU won the individual medalist award with a 164 (84-80).

The silver is the program’s fourth of the fall, including losing a tiebreaker at Grinnell last Saturday.

Maggie Yang tied for second out of 32 competitors with a 165 (84-81). Demi Coertze  finished in the top ten as well, tying for sixth at 167 (85-82).

Courtney Kronmuller tied for 12th at 173 (84-89), while Ashley Manhnieo tied for 19th at 181 (94-87). Natalie Booton rounded out the scoring in a tie for 23rd at 183 (87-96).

“We are in a little bit of a funk right now and just have to play through it to get back on the right track,” Penn coach Nik Rule said. “All in all, it was not the worst thing that could have happened. It was a nice wake-up call for us. We should have won this tournament had we played anywhere close to our potential. Our ladies know that and embrace the opportunity to learn and get better.”

“Overall, this fall we have finished second a lot, but the bright side is that we are in the hunt every tournament,” Rule added. “The wins will come. We want to peak in April, not in October, and I believe we are on the path to do that.”

William Penn takes a week off before closing out its fall season on October 19-20 by hosting the Lady Statesmen Fall Classic in Oskaloosa. Play will be contested at Edmundson Golf Course.
