No. 1 Penn survives scare from McPherson

POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. — Wednesday was not a good day to be a seeded team at the NAIA Division II National Championship.

In the three previous games prior to top-ranked William Penn’s contest with McPherson, each of the three seeded teams went down to defeat — two by at least 20 points.

The Statesmen, however, bucked that trend after trailing at halftime to rally past the Bulldogs 71-65 at Keter Gymnasium.

The win, Penn’s 17th in a row, was the first in four appearances at the national tournament for the 31-1 Statesmen, who face 17th-ranked Bethel (24-9) at noon on Friday.

Brandon Beasley poured in a game-high 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to pace the Statesmen attack.

More details can be found in Friday's Herald.
