Central golf programs ranked among best

PELLA — Central College’s men’s and women’s golf programs are ranked among the top 50 in the U.S. in the academics rankings of the Golf Digest College Guide.

The Dutch men’s program is rated 23rd and the women’s program is ranked 28th. Princeton University tops both lists, which include colleges and universities that do not award athletics scholarships.

Central is the top-ranked Iowa Conference men’s program. Wartburg is rated 25th with Simpson 38th.

In the women’s rankings, Wartburg is 16th, Simpson is 18th, Buena Vista is 30th and Loras is 48th while another Iowa school, Grinnell, is ranked 42nd.

The rankings are listed in the September issue of Golf Digest. They were determined by grading each program in six categories: team-adjusted scoring average over the past four seasons, player growth as measured by individual scoring average improvement, academics as determined by the U.S. News and World Report guidebook, climate and coaches/facilities.

Central’s men have captured 25 Iowa Conference championships and made 26 NCAA Division III tournament appearances while the Dutch women have won eight league crowns.

Central also gets high marks for its facilities. The new on-campus Ryerson Practice Range includes a practice putting green, target greens and a sand bunker, while Central’s home course, Pella’s Bos Landen Golf Club, was ranked as the top public course in Iowa for four years by Golf Digest.
