OSKALOOSA — Grinnell came to town Wednesday night needing a win and the Tiger softball team played like a hungry team in blanking the Oskaloosa Indians 6-0.
The story of the game for the Tigers would have to be the pitching of Taylor Wells. The diminutive right-hander was perfect through four innings and had the Indians completely off stride. The perfect game was broken up with one out in the fifth when Megan Gott coaxed a base on balls. But a strikeout and a ground out got Wells out of the inning.
The first hit for the Indians came with one out in the sixth when Jacque Terrell ripped a shot off the glove of the third baseman. A pop up and a ground out finished that inning and added to the offensive frustration.
With one out in the seventh, Sarah Hynick drilled a double off the fence in left field and she moved to third when a throw got away. Two weak ground balls brought the game to a close.
The Tigers would get the only run they would need in the top of the first. Morgan Sharp reached on a bunt single and moved up on a single by Jorden Finch. Heather Davis would get the RBI with a shot through the middle.
Oskaloosa starter Jennifer Whitehead shut the Tigers out over the next four innings but hit a snag in the top of the sixth. Teresa Kriegel singled and scored on a double by Leyna Noah. Ashley Hulsing brought two more runs home with a towering home run over the left field barrier.
That blast chased Whitehead and brought Brittany Redlich to the circle. Redlich got out of the inning, but ran into trouble in the seventh as three walks, an error and a base hit scored two more runs.
The game left Indians coach Jay Harms looking for answers.
“Right now, I don’t have an answer,” Harms said. “We thought we had it figured out at Knoxville, but we reverted back to old habits. I wish I had the answer. We made her (Wells) look pretty good. She did a nice job, but we didn’t adjust to her at all. About all we could get were pop ups and weak ground balls. You have to be ready in this league every night and I thought they came out much more aggressive.”
The Indians are now 8-8 and 2-5 in the Little Hawkeye Conference. Thursday night they go to Norwalk and Friday they are at Hoover in the Jack North Classic where they will play Clear Creek-Amana and Iowa City Regina. Saturday they will be at home with another classic at the Lacey Complex.
