STATE CENTER —
Oskaloosa rested some of its cross country team out from Saturday’s West Marshall Invitational with state qualifying meets coming up later this week.
The Indians still did quite well as all the varsity runners finished in the top 25.
The girls team was third with 62 points while the boys placed second with 63 points.
“We ran well considering it was very windy and cold,” Indians coach Keith Comfort said. “We held a couple kids out to give them a little extra rest. All in all though there were some good performances and I was happy with the effort.”
Kamron VanHulzen was the top finisher for the boys as he ran 18:05 to come in fifth while Jared Boggess was ninth in the time of 18:17.
“Kamron and Jared Boggess both ran well at the top of our lineup. Jared is rounding into racing shape now in just his third race,” Comfort said. “Kamron has been solid all year and continued that today. Caleb (Fisher) and Gerrit (VanMaanen) have shown improvement throughout the year and did well tonight. We used this race to get an idea of who would run in the state qualifying race next week. We have some good competition going for the final spot on both boys and girls teams. We will really need to have very strong performances out of the bottom of our lineup to be competitive.”
Lesley Roquet and her sister, Kelsey, recorded top-10 finishes for the girls. Lesley Roquet was eighth in 16:36 while Kelsey Roquet ran 16:52 to come in 10th.
“Lesley and Kelsey led the girls efforts. They have been our 2-3 runners most of the year,” Comfort said. “Meghan (Toubekis) had a real good race and we need that from her. All the girls ran real good times. I thought Julia (Coniglio) ran a very good race to finish runner-up in the JV race and Graeme (Kuba) did the same in winning the boys JV race.
“The middle school kids finished their season with strong efforts. They have worked really hard this year and have improved all year long. Some of them will be moving up to the high school team next year and will provide additional depth to the team. There is a lot of young talent in our program right now.”
Oskaloosa runs in a Class 3A state qualifying meet Thursday in Pella.
