PLEASANTVILLE —
Last week was an ESPN night at the ballpark. This week was Weather Channel’s night. Pleasantville waited out two 30-minute delays before earning a 32-12 District 6 Class A football victory over North Mahaska.
The first half, which lasted nearly three hours, was all Pleasantville as the Trojans built an 18-0 lead. Pleasantville was up 12-0 when lightning forced stoppage of play. The stoppage came following a bizarre series of events that included an ejection.
Pleasantville tailback Trey Busick ran for 23 yards. North Mahaska was whistled for a facemask penalty and 15 yards was added. When it was announced, a North Mahaska player reacted and was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct. The argument escalated and another flag was thrown. The play resulted in a gain moving from the Trojan 10-yard line to North Mahaska’s 22.
Mother Nature added a celestial light show and the officials ordered the field vacated for 30 minutes.
When play resumed the North Mahaska defense stepped up and made a stop, but could not muster a score. Pleasantville took over at the Warhawk 41 and seven plays later, Trojan quarterback Hagen Fouch hit Riley Kirchau on a 23-yard pass.
Following a 10-minute halftime Pleasantville added two more quick scores. Then the Warhawks, who have been known to battle back, did just that Friday.
“We never quit,” said North Mahaska coach Steve Ehret. “We came back. I just made a bad call.”
The bad call he referred to was a pass over the middle that ended a drive and Warhawk momentum. But before that, the Warhawks put a bit of a scare into the Trojans. Warhawk defenseman Alex Dawley put his team in position when he recovered a Trojan fumble at the North Mahaska 42.
Two pass plays and a key run put North Mahaska on the board. Quarterback Beau Freeborn hooked up with Zach Anderson on a 34-yard strike then followed it up with a 6-yard pass to Justin Richards. Two plays later, Karson Stodghill darted 23 yards for a score. The two-point attempt failed.
Following the kickoff, Richards picked off Fouch and North Mahaska was in business again at the Pleasantville 27-yard line. A penalty and two runs by Stodghill and the Warhawks added another six. The two-point failed again.
On the next Warhawk possession, Freeborn tried to hit Richards across the middle and Busick stepped in and grabbed the pass.
“We just gave up two big plays and I made a bad call,” said Ehret. “I thought we played much better tonight.”
Pleasantville amassed 366 yards in offense to 202 for the Warhawks. The Trojans won for the second time while North Mahaska is still seeking their second win. They will have a chance next week at Senior Night when the Warhawks host Southeast Warren in the season-ending contest.
