PELLA —
The way Oskaloosa began its Class 3A, District 8 game with rival Pella Friday night, it seemed like the Indians would not allow the Little Dutch to have possession of the football.
The Indians began the contest running 17 plays and taking more than 10 minutes off the clock before Jonah Renter pushing a 27-yard field goal attempt wide right.
That set the stage for the Little Dutch (6-2 overall, 5-0 district) to take a 17-0 decision from the Indians.
Pella mounted an 8-play, 71-yard drive after finally gaining the ball and Seth Johnson booted a 26-yard field goal early in the second quarter to put the Little Dutch on top for good.
“We couldn’t capitalize and had a chance to put points on the board on a chip-shot field goal and came up short,” Oskaloosa coach Mark Schilb said.
The Indians (1-7, 1-4) pinned the Little Dutch deep in their territory as Oskaloosa punter Tyce Sarver kicked the ball down at the Pella 1 with 8:03 left in the first half.
Three running plays netted no yards so Pella was faced with fourth down at its 1-yard line.
Pella’s Isaac Naaktgeboren got his punt away and Oskaloosa was appeared ready to take move the ball in good field position. However, the Indians were called for roughing the punter and the Little Dutch regained possession at their 15-yard line. Nathan Henry would carry the ball for 37 yards on four consecutive plays to the Oskaloosa 48. Two plays later, Josh De Waard, who completed all eight of his passes, connected with Jacob Vollmar on a 37-yard touchdown pass to culminate a 10-play, 99-yard drive to put Pella on top 10-0 at intermission.
The halftime lasted longer than normal as inclement weather arrived and the game was delayed twice in the third quarter as the teams struggled to get any offensive flow going.
Pella’s first possession of the quarter ended with Oskaloosa’s Dane Jones recovering a fumble at the Indians’ 33-yard line.
After forcing the Indians into a three-and-out, Pella drove to the Oskaloosa 21 only to lose the ball again on a fumble, this time recovered by Patrick Flaherty at his 24.
The Indians put together a drive that resulted in three first downs with Nate Van Veldhuizen getting two of those first downs on runs of 22 and 14 yards.
Unfortunately for Oskaloosa, the drive stalled as Austin Redlich, who tried to hook up with Tyce Sarver near the goal line, was intercepted by Vollmar in the end zone for a touchback.
The Little Dutch took more than 5 minutes off the clock in 11 plays, going 80 yards that ended with a 27-yard scamper by Henry to put the finishing touches on the game.
Schilb said Pella’s defense, led by Nathan Clayberg, took over the game, making it tough for the Indians to mount any kind of offense.
“He almost single-handedly took the game over,” he said. “We couldn’t block him. He’s a very good linebacker give credit to him.”
The Indians close the season this Friday against Knoxville on Senior Night.
