Lady Statesmen earn stripes against talented field at NAIA Preview

LINCOLN, Neb. — The William Penn women’s golf team tied a school record once again in finishing high at the NAIA Preview hosted by Doane College Monday and Tuesday.

The Lady Statesmen finished sixth out of 21 teams at the par-71 Wilderness Ridge Golf Course with a score of 652 (327-325). Lubbock Christian (Texas) won the team crown by 24 strokes with a 592 (302-290). Wilderness Ridge will be the host course for next spring’s 2013 NAIA National Championships.

Lubbock Christian also had the top two individuals finishers with Sinae Montoya taking the medalist honor with a two-under 140 (74-66).

Including the team champion, four of the five programs that finished in front of the Lady Statesmen placed in the top 12 at last year’s NAIA National Championships. William Penn finished higher than two national-qualifying squads from last year and was within 16 strokes of third place.

Its Tuesday school-record score of 325 is the fifth time it has been posted.

The Lady Statesmen missed the top five for just the second time in the last two years, but bettered their finish by four sports (tenth of 15 in 2011) from a year ago, while playing in a larger field.

Maggie Yang placed 12th out of 107 players with a 156 (78-78). It is just the second time in her career she has been outside of the top 10 (both at the NAIA Preview).

Demi Coertze was just two strokes behind her, placing 15th at 158 (78-80), while Courtney Kronmuller  was 22nd at 163 (83-80).

“After weeks of qualifying and competition internally, our lineup is finally starting to produce desired results,” Penn coach Nik Rule said. “Our top three continue to lead this team by showing consistent improvement and Maggie's 78-78 tournament finish is a good example of that stability up top."

Natalie Booton earned herself a top-50 finish as well, tying for 41st at 175 (88-87), while Mayci Rule rounded out the varsity in a tie for 62nd at 185 (91-94).

“This team is really starting to understand what they are capable of day in and day out,” Rule said. “The course we played was very challenging and the field was very deep, and to walk away in sixth place after two very consistent days of golf shows we are on the right track.”

“The group we have here is capable of going under 320 every round,” Rule added. “Even after how we played this weekend there was a level of dissatisfaction and a new motivation to find ways to go lower. That type of never-say-die attitude, that is eager for better results, is why I am confident we will not only continue to match our current school record, but topple it in the future."

William Penn travels to Grinnell Saturday to compete in the Grinnell Invitational. Action will be contested at the Grinnell Country Club.
