Van Wyk signs letter of intent to be a Triton

By JIM GRIES

OSKALOOSA — Oskaloosa senior defensive back Jordan Van Wyk will be going from an Indian to a Triton,

Van Wyk, who will be playing for the South squad at this summer’s Shrine Bowl, signed a national letter of intent to play football at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge.

The Tritons went 6-3 under head coach Kevin Twait and have a strong history of high-caliber football teams.

“I visited the campus and loved it,” Van Wyk said. “I think I’ll have a lot of success if I work hard and that’s going to be the key — working hard for them.”

Van Wyk is not the first player coached by Oskaloosa coach Darrell Schumacher to play collegiately at Iowa Central. Both of Schumacher’s sons began their collegiate careers at Iowa Central before transferring to 4-year schools.

Van Wyk is expected to be a defensive back and kick returner for the Tritons.

He averaged 21.3 yards per kickoff return for the Indians, who went 2-7 this past season. He added 53 yards on 11 punt returns and was fourth on the team in tackles with 49. Van Wyk broke up a team-best 13 passes and had two tackles for loss.

He plans to play two years for the Tritons then transfer to a Division I college and continue his football career.
