OSKALOOSA —
It appeared like Oskaloosa was going to have an easy time with Carlisle when the teams met at Oskaloosa Stadium for their Class 2A substate matchup.
The Wildcats had lost their last 12 outings and had a 2-13 record coming in while the Indians were 7-6 on the season.
It was far from being an easy game.
After giving up a goal to Evan Mom in the first 2 minutes of the game, Oskaloosa bounced back with two early goals in the second half only to see Carlisle tie it and force the game to overtime.
Neither team could score in overtime so the game was decided in a shootout.
The Indians, using regular player Tyler Hafner as goalkeeper after regular goalkeeper Logan Ridenour was issued a red card and making the team play short the rest of the way, survived the shootout for a 3-2 victory.
The Indians, now assured of a winning record at 8-6, meet Norwalk Wednesday in Norwalk.
Oskaloosa had to battle through numerous yellow cards throughout the night and had to play the final 8:19 of overtime without Ridenour.
Hafner’s toughest challenge came late in the game when Mom was awarded a direct kick and the game tied at 2. Mom, who had two goals in the game, booted the ball high over the goal and the game went on.
The Indians had the first chance in the shootout and Tristan Cook, who put Oskaloosa in the board with a goal in the 46th minute, kicked the ball past Carlisle goalkeeper Daniel Hintz for the 1-0 lead.
Carlisle’s Mauricio Millan was next and Hafner made a leaping save to his left and knocked the ball away.
Jaycob Lee, who had Oskaloosa’s second goal minutes after Cook’s tally, was next up and he got the ball past Hintz for a big 2-0 cushion.
Zach Smith was the next kicker for Carlisle and he booted the ball high over the goal to bring up the Indians’ Colton Crookham with a chance to put the Wildcats in dire straits.
Crookham hit the crossbar with his attempt to keep Carlisle alive with Mom, the team’s leading goal scorer, coming up.
Mom got the ball past Hafner to give the Wildcats a chance as Lincoln Morris up next for the Indians.
Morris was successful on his attempt for a 3-1 advantage with Dylan Pinckney being the last hope for Carlisle to stay in the shootout.
Pinckney had the same result as Smith with his try, kicking the ball high over the goal as the Oskaloosa team rushed the field in celebration.
“Hafner came up huge,” Oskaloosa co-coach Greg Walter said. “He really hadn’t practiced goalkeeper all season, but he came in with some big saves in the penalty kicks.
“You have to be proud of the effort. We had a couple of our seniors get yellow cards and Logan went down with a red card, but everyone picked it up. It was a great team effort from everybody, not just from the starters. It shows that we’re a good team.”
