Lady Statesmen drop ‘sandwich’ game of Wisconsin trip, 1-0

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. — The William Penn women’s soccer team stood strong defensively, but was just a little shy of perfection in a 1-0 loss to host Cardinal Stritch as a part of the Cardinal Stritch Tournament Sunday.

The Lady Statesmen (0-4) were outshot 24-4, including a 15-2 margin in the first half, but kept the Wolves (1-3) out of the net for the initial 51 minutes of play.

The scoreless tie was broken up at the 51:36 mark when CSU’s Maggy Waech scored unassisted. The Statesmen, paced by two shots from Silvia Munoz, failed to supply an answer to Waesch’s goal.

“I am very pleased with the effort shown today after a big loss yesterday,” Penn coach Willie McGowan said. “We put together a solid 90 minutes, but sadly it was not quite enough. We did, however, look a little more alert up front and created a few good chances where, with a little more composure, we could have snagged a draw or possibly snuck out with a win.”
