The Statesmen soccer squad got on the board first, but was worn down by a formidable home team in a 3-1 loss to Central Methodist in non-conference action Thursday.
The Eagles got off the first five shots of the evening, but William Penn (1-2) showed quality can be better than quantity by scoring on its first shot. Matheus Riberio put the ball in unassisted against goalkeeper German Schnacht at the 35:05 mark.
The Statesmen kept Central Methodist (1-0-1) at zero for another 39 minutes, but Erwin Sanchez Jr. finally managed the equalizer in the 75th minute. That opened the floodgates for the Eagles as they scored the go-ahead at 86:10 and added an insurance goal just over two minutes later. Central Methodist outshot the Statesmen 19-4, including a 12-2 margin after intermission.
Mason Bandy posted six stops in the loss.
