KBOE, Pepsi and Titan Machinery Fair Night checkers go to Strickler, VanderBeek, Griffiths, Chandler and Sobbing

OSKALOOSA — Racing action for the second straight night at the Southern Iowa Speedway would see the roar of engines on KBOE Radio, Pepsi-Mountain Dew Memphis Bottling Company and Titan Machinery Night at the Southern Iowa Fair despite temperatures getting over 100 degrees the action on the track was just as hot.

First feature of the night was the Autocrafters/Whalen Racing IMCA Sport Compacts eight-lap feature and it was again Dallas Chandler driving Bill Whalen Jr’s car. Chandler would lead all eight laps and take the third win in a row. Bill Whalen Jr. finished second, Merv Chandler was third, John Whalen was fourth and Duayne Herb was fifth.

In the Tracy Elevator IMCA Hobby Stock feature, it was Dustin Griffiths taking the lead, but behind him the battle was really heating up as on lap 6. Shannon Anderson and Kevin Fee would get together coming off of turn 4 and Fee’s car would go on its side while driving on the wall, Fee would get it back on four wheels just as the yellow would come out. Fee would go to the work area and Anderson sent to the tail for questionable driving.

When the race resumed, it was Griffiths still continuing to lead it and Mike Hughes would get to second until Anderson would take the second spot on lap 13 but just as Anderson got to the start line he would have a flat tire sending him to the pits. Griffiths would take his third win of the season at Oskaloosa and second win of the week. Hughes was second, Donavon Nunnikhoven was third, Danny Thrasher was fourth and Bobby Greene was fifth.

Carter’s Manufacturing IMCA Stock Cars saw Nathan Wood, back in his car, take the early lead but staying right there behind him was Todd Reitzler and Matt Greiner. Wood would lead the first four laps easily but then the caution would come out for Reitzler going off the backstretch in turn 3. On the reestart, it was Wood still leading but Greiner woudl make the move on lap 6, Wood would also get passed by Damon Murty and Colt Mather as well. Greiner out front leading until the next race caution on lap 9, this time for Todd Phillips going of the backstretch. Greiner would get a great restart, but it was Damon Murty going off turn 3 on lap 12. Greiner would now have to deal with Zack VanderBeek. VanderBeek would make the pass and take the lead and not look back. Greiner, Mather, Brad Pinkerton and Wood rounded out the top 5.

The Musco Lighting IMCA Modifieds saw Kyle Strickler, known as “The High Side Tickler” from Mooresville, N.C., take the lead but then the caution would fly twice on lap 4, first for Devin Havlik spinning out on the bottom side of the front stretch and then again on the restart on the backstretch which also involved Greg Cox and Ryan Cook. Strickler still lead but then on lap 7, he would be passed by Jacob Murray. It was Murray leading until lap 12 because just as Murray came across the line, he saw his engine expire he would coast it to a rest in turn 3 forcing the caution to come out. Stickler would inherit the lead and lead the remaining 8 laps to take the win. Josh Most would try to pass Stickler on the topside because Strickler was on the bottom but failed and would settle for second, Todd Shute was third, Brandon Banks was fourth and Andrew Schroeder was fifth.

Final Feature of the night was the Pyramid Graphics and Sports IMCA SportMods and it was Jesse Sobbing leading from start to finish in the feature that would go green-to-checkered 15 laps. For Sobbing, it was win number 7 at Oskaloosa. Brett Lowry was second, Curtis VanDerWal was third, Ben Kates was fourth and Eric Flander was fifth.

Next Wednesday Night, the Southern Iowa Speedway will return to action as it will be Mahaska Bowl Night. Des Moines residents get in for $5 plus it’s Boys Scouts and Cadets Night. Hot Laps at 7 p.m. and Racing at 7:30 p.m.
