OSKALOOSA —
For the first time in many years, Oskaloosa hosted a high school bowling meet Wednesday at Mahaska Bowl.
The meet was originally scheduled with four teams entered for Saturday, but inclement weather and two teams could not return made the meet Wednesday a dual with Pella Christian competing.
The Oskaloosa girls recorded the win by 21 pins as the Indians rolled a 1,777 total to the Eagles’ 1,756. Oskaloosa had an edge in Baker games, which each of the five bowlers bowl two frames each, 601 to 581.
The Oskaloosa boys came up on the losing end with its match with the Eagles, 22,999 to 2,830. Pella Christian also had 986 pin total in Baker games to OSkaloosa’s 891.
Oskaloosa coach Chris Clark was happy how the team bowled in the only home meet of the season.
“The kids bowled really well today,” he said. “We were down by about 70 pins going into Baker and they let up a bit in the second, third and fourth games of Baker. They seem to be doing that and it’s kind of mental for them. They need to get over that mental weakness they have.”
One highlight for Oskaloosa was a split conversion by Kalob Gist, who made the 6-7-10 split.
Clark was happy to have bowling back in high school in Oskaloosa.
“It’s great. Bowling back in Oskaloosa for high school is outstanding,” he said. “There’s been a lot of criticism that bowling’s not a sport. Me personally, I’ve bowled for many years. I’ve bowled professional on the regional tour, all around the Midwest Region and I’ll tell you what, bowling is a grinding spot on your body. You don’t think it is by watching but it is.
“The kids come out and they try. A lot of them are first-year bowlers and I’ve seen nothing but improvement throughout the year.”
Oskaloosa gets back to action Saturday at a tournament at Pella’s Excit-A-Bowl.
