IOWA CITY —
Oskaloosa had some high hopes of sending some of its wrestlers to the upcoming state tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
In the end, only junior Dane Jones was to get through to the state tournament with his runner-up finish at 195 pounds.
The Indians finished eighth with 74 points as four wrestlers — Skylar DeJong at 113, Nate Caves at 120, Drea Lamb at 152 and Mason Wisse at 160 — came in fourth place.
“There were a lot of good kids here and we had high expectations for the guys here and they fell short because they weren’t ready,” Oskaloosa coach Brandon Graham said.
Jones, who is ranked seventh in the weight class, was the top seed and received a bye in the opening round. He took on Jacob Dilks of Mount Pleasant in the semifinal. Jones controlled the match and advanced to the final with a 10-5 decision.
In the championship match, Jones met No. 9 Ryan Maas of Iowa City High and Maas scratched out a 3-2 win to claim the district title.
Maas picked up a penalty point on a technical violation for locked hands in the second period and escaped for a 2-0 lead going to the final period. Jones pulled a reversal to tie the match, but Maas got the deciding point when Jones let Maas escape following a stoppage in action.
Jones tried to put Maas down for the winning takedown, but was unable to do so.
Jones had to wait until the third-place match to see if he would have to have a wrestleback match for the state tournament berth, but Dilks pinned Dalton Jensen of Keokuk, and since Jones had already beaten Dilks earlier in the tournament, Jones picked up the spot in the state tournament with a 31-6 record.
Jones, who will be making his second trip to the state tournament, said he should have been a bit more aggressive against Maas than he was.
“I should have taken more shots instead of waiting,” he said. “I think I’ve got a pretty good shot (at winning or placing). I’m pretty confident.”
“Dane is always hurt when he doesn’t have a first-round match,” Graham said. “He’s not even going yet. He beat a good mount Plesant kid and lost a close one in the finals. It happens. He’s going to bounce back and perform at the state tournament. That’s what matters next.”
The Indians got two other placewinners as Cody Jones came in fifth at 152 and Cody Tuttle was sixth at 220.
The rest of the Oskaloosa wrestlers — Zac Randau at 106, Mitchell Schaffner at 126, Tanner wanders at 132, Jared Pace at 145 and Dylan Tuttle at 285 — failed to place in the top six.
