OSKALOOSA —
As expected, two of the top teams in Class 3A dominated the Oskaloosa Tournament Saturday.
Top-ranked Southeast Polk won all five of its matches with the closest being a 54-21 over No. 9 West Des Moines Dowling Catholic, which went 4-1 on the day.
Oskaloosa placed second in its pool with a 2-1 record after beating Ottumwa 51-30 and Waterloo West 42-36, and dropping a 38-33 match to Dowling Catholic.
The Indians then lost to Southeast Polk 57-21 and Ballard 47-33 to close out the day at 2-3 overall.
Oskaloosa coach Brandon Graham was quite happy with the team’s performance.
“I don’t have any complaints. The kids went out there and fought hard,” he said “We got a couple of wins and lost a couple of close ones, but overall, everybody wrestled well on the mat.”
He cited the performances of just about the entire roster — Skylar DeJong at 113 pounds, Andrew Landgrebe at 170, Mason Wisse at 182, Dane Jones at 195, Cody Jones at 160, Mitchell Schaffner at 132, Nate Caves at 120 and Hunter Sherwood at 220, who suffered an ankle injury against Southeast Polk.
“They kept fighting and never gave up,” Graham said.
DeJong was among the Indians wrestlers who had a very successful day.
He recorded wins in all five of his matches — the first time he made the weight at 113. Among the wins he had was one over Southeast Polk’s Nolan Hellickson, ranked third at 106, and No. 6 Jonah Eide of Dowling Catholic.
Graham thinks DeJong should be more comfortable at 113 and he performed a lot better.
“We still have a young group and have a lot of improvements to make and toward the end of the year, I think everyone will be ready,” Graham said.
The Indians get back to the mat Dec. 15 at the Pella Invitational.
