OSKALOOSA — Dave Sedivec is a life-long outdoorsman and he’s bringing his love of nature with him as the Mahaska County Conservation Board’s new director.
Sedivec, 50, has been a Chickasaw County park ranger and roadside manager for the past 15 years.
Sedivec was one of 22 applicants for the conservation board director position, interim Mahaska County Conservation Board Director Ben Hoskinson said. Sedivec will begin work in Mahaska County on April 6, he said.
Sedivec said he’s familiar with Mahaska County — when he worked for the state in 1984 and 1985, he worked at the Wapello Wildlife Unit and spent a lot of time at Lake Hawthorn, near Barnes City. He was in Oskaloosa Wednesday making preparations for moving here and beginning his new job.
Sedivec said his new job will be similar to his old one.
“There’ll be more office work, less field work,” the jobs will be similar, he said.
When he’s out in the field, Sedivec likes to teach people about the outdoors.
The new conservation board director loves the outdoors.
“I hunt, fish, backpack. I trap. I’m a scout leader,” he said.
Sedivec has two children, a daughter who is a college senior and a son who is a sophomore in high school and both are very active in the outdoors.
Sedivec likes to teach others about the outdoors in his areas of expertise such as winter camping, hunter education and fur harvesting.
One of the reasons that Sedivec came to Mahaska County is that the conservation board has a good reputation for getting things done. When he starts his job, Sedivec said he wants to keep the MCCB’s momentum going and just “keep everything going in a good direction.”
“I’m excited about getting down here,” he said. “There’s a really good staff.”
Sedivec said he already knows the conservation board staff, so the transition will be easier. He wants to also thank the conservation board for hiring him.
“It’s going to work good for everybody,” he said.
Hoskinson said the conservation board hopes to have an open house for Sedivec sometime in May.
“It’s going to be business as usual,” Hoskinson said. “He starts April 6. He’s well qualified and he’ll do a great job.”
