OSKALOOSA — This classic production braved the storm — literally.
Oskaloosa High School’s Drama and Music Department’s production of “The Music Man” promises to be a good one, despite this school year’s weather woes, according to Director Jessica Weinreich.
With more than 50 student actors involved in the production, Weinreich admitted it has been somewhat of a challenge to tackle this musical. The production also includes a nearly 20-piece orchestra headed by Weinreich’s husband Chris, who serves as musical director and “pit conductor.”
“Just trying to keep track of them all and make sure they’re doing what they’re supposed to be doing at the right time — it can be challenging,” said Weinreich.
This school year’s winter weather wasn’t any help either, she said. Students of Oskaloosa Schools have missed a total of nine full days of school so far this school year.
Auditions for the school’s production of “The Music Man” were supposed to be held before winter break of this school year. It would take until early January before the cast was finally narrowed down and they were able to have their first rehearsal, said Weinreich.
“These kids worked really, really hard and they were just beaten by the weather,” explained Weinreich. “We lost so many rehearsals because the snow was terrible, but they have worked their tails off and overcome it. They’re ready to put on a great show for everyone.”
Despite the bad weather, Weinreich said the choice to put on “The Music Man” was an easy one. The play, originally written by Iowa native Meredith Wilson, is always well received, she said.
“Iowans love the show and it’s a ton of fun,” said Weinreich at Wednesday night’s rehearsal.
